There is an important choice coming to the Chicago City Council that will affect your rights and the survival of restaurants and bars.

SUPPORT the compromise smoking ban ordinance that bans smoking in most areas but allows some separate smoking areas in bars and restaurants! (the Coleman-Natarus ordinance)

OPPOSE
the radical total ban ordinance to outlaw smoking even in separate smoking rooms of bars and outside in beer gardens! (the Smith ordinance)

The radical total smoking ban would force bar and restaurant patrons who smoke to go outside, inevitably disturbing neighboring residents and causing litter and possible security problems. In addition, total smoking bans have been demonstrated to hurt the economy of a city overall and lead to loss of income for beverage service personnel and other retail workers. The compromise ordinance protects non-smokers without the huge economic cost, neighborhood issues and loss of smoker’s rights that a the radical total ban ordinance would cause. In fact, the compromise ordinance will provide additional funds to City by levying a tax on establishments that allow smoking to pay for ordinance enforcement and stop-smoking programs.

There are many ways to provide a comfortable environment for non-smokers while accommodating both smokers and non-smokers, including expanded no-smoking sections and the latest in air cleaning technology that many bars and restaurants are installing now. The compromise ordinance respects the rights of both smokers and non-smokers and insures the city of Chicago will not lose much needed sales tax and licensing revenue.
